Matthew Sotelo
Instructor of Color Guard
Catherine Alvarado was born and raised in New Braunfels, TX but grew up on the "Blue Side" of the town. She graduated NBHS in 2008 and spent her years there as Section Leader, Drum Major and even snagged Homecoming Princess. She never was in color guard but admired them from afar.
She attended Texas Lutheran University from 2009 - 2012 and got her first degree in Psychology with a focus on experimental psychology. Her 7 years at TLU she was in band and was the principle flute of the top ensemble 5 of the 7 years and principal flute in the orchestra for 5 years as well. She also was in the Women's Choir and played for many Vesper Concerts and Tours. After graduation she realized she needed to follow her real passion which was music. After graduating in 2015 for the second time with her Music Education Degree she found her first position at Alamo Height MS. She then moved to John Paul Stevens High School and after 2 years there with much success in the marching band and concert band, she moved closer to home at NBMS. After 3 years there she realized she wanted to go back to teaching High School Band and found her new home at Canyon High School where she is now in charge of the color guard and the symphonic band. She is excited to see the program grow again and is 100% loving being a part of the pageantry of color guard and winter guard (just don't ask her to toss a rifle, it doesn't end well).
Mr.Sotelo began his Colorguard journey at Thomas Jefferson High School in San Antonio Texas. Shortly after graduating high school Mr. Sotelo took over the program at Thomas Jefferson in the spring of 2014. Over the last 8 years he has worked with and choreographed for many different programs in and around the San Antonio area and began working with the Canyon Colorguard in late fall of 2021.
In 2016 and 2017 Mr. Sotelo marched competitively with Industry Independent at the WGI World Championships in Dayton, Ohio. He hopes to finish his degree in Mathematics, and begin teaching at Canyon High School full time while overseeing the Colorguard program.

The art and activity of marching is one that combines quality music with an effective visual presentation. Through consistent and positive instruction, it is the goal of the staff to provide our students and audiences with both a highly competitive and entertaining marching band/winter guard shows. It takes all of us to work together for the Canyon High School Band and Color Guard.
The goal of the Canyon High School Color Guard is to provide an opportunity for the students to participate in representing their school. The Color Guard is a group that teaches performance skills, builds confidence, self-esteem, and most importantly teamwork.
